At Normal First, we are fortunate to have many retired pastors and a lay speaker who serve in many different capacities.
This weekend we have invited our Lay Speaker, Kathy Alexander, and retired pastor, Rev. Merlin Mather, to deliver the message.
Kathy Alexander will preach on Saturday evening. Kathy serves as the Director of Development at Evenglow Lodge in Pontiac. Kathy’s sermon is “First Priorities”. The Scripture readings are Genesis 1:1-5, Exodus 20:22,Exodus 21:1, and Exodus 23:19, Luke 2:4-7, Mark 9:30a, Mark 9:33-35 and Revelation 22:12-13.
For our Sunday worship services, Rev. Mather will be bringing the message. Merlin is a retired pastoral counselor from Advocate BroMenn Counseling Services. Merlin’s sermon is “Martin Luther: Renegade and Prophet”. The Scripture is 1 Corinthians 1:4-9.
Beginning next Wednesday, October 11, Merlin will be leading a 4-week small group about the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation The group will be using the book October 31, 1517: Martin Luther and the Day that Changed the World by Martin Marty.
Quick history lesson: We think of October 31, 1517 as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation as Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of the Wittenburg Church. Luther was protesting the many ways that he believed the church had gone astray.
Though long ago, as is true with much of history, there’s much for us to learn from this event that led to the Protestant Reformation.
You are invited to come and learn more — beginning October 11th at 5:45 in the Church library.
Grace and Peace,
