Saturday’s worship service, the focus will be on the parable of the yeast (Matthew 13:33). “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.” Being only one line, this parable is often overlooked or clustered with others.
I’m grateful to Kathy Alexander, one of our Lay Speakers, who will be preaching and leading worship on Saturday evening.
Our scripture for the Sunday services could be titled The Poor . . . Rich Man. Luke (12:13-21) tells the story of the man worried about getting his share of the family inheritance. He wants Jesus to help him with that. At first, Jesus says in a sense, that’s not really my area of concern or authority to help you deal with the family inheritance (12:14).
But then Jesus recognized what was driving this man’s request. So his follow-up response was, “Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed! Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot” (12:15).
Greed was driving this man’s desire for the family inheritance. Greed was the god of his life.
Colossians 3:1-11 directs us to seek the values of heaven over the values of the things on earth. Amongst many of the things that Colossians warns against, greed is one of them. And the Poor Rich Man illustrates that for us in the Luke story.
In the parable Jesus imagined the end of the poor rich man’s life, being faced with the question, “Now, who gets all of the things that you have stored up?” Whose will they be?
I imagine though that what Jesus was really saying was: “Whose will you be? Who do you belong to, for now and for eternity? Do you belong to all that you have stored up or do you belong to God?”
We’ll worship this weekend Saturday at 5:00 and Sunday at 9:30 in the sanctuary. The Sunday 11:00 service will be held in the chapel.
We also invite those who are new to the church to join Pastors Kent & Kim this Sunday in the Fellowship Hall following the 9:30 service for Coffee with the Pastors. It’s a chance to get better acquainted, learn more about the church, and ask questions.
Hope you have a good weekend and look forward to seeing you in worship.
*An update on our Wednesday evening service – 54 people gathered this past Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall for worship. It was truly an inter generational worship service with children gathered in the center. The next Wednesday service will be June 26 at 6:30
