ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The position involves the following essential functions, duties, and required activities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable persons with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

The Director of Buildings and Grounds must:

  1. Be a proactive self-starter and have the initiative to work independently and prioritize the work needing completion to both the inside and outside of the FUMC property.
  2. Be responsible for maintenance of all church facilities, property, equipment, and furnishings; including ensuring that needed repairs occur in a timely manner;
  3. Work with church leaders to develop a proactive building maintenance and improvement plan;
  4. Coordinate the work of outside contractors for jobs both inside and outside the church when necessary; confirm that the work completed is sufficient; contact contractors when necessary; and coordinate gathering written work bids by outside contractors.
  5. Conduct preventive maintenance inspections.
  6. Ensure that the church building and grounds are clean and orderly prior to all weekend church services and activities.
  7. Assist in the hiring and/or termination of all custodial personnel, including participation in the advertising and interview process and making recommendations to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee regarding all hires.
  8. Supervise all part-time custodial personnel by scheduling, directing and monitoring all work performed and provide custodial personnel with prioritized list(s) of items needing attention.
  9. Ensure that custodial personnel are available within the FUMC property from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, Sunday 8 a.m. to completion of the 11 a.m. service, and that the church is locked Sunday through Friday by 10 p.m.
  10. Provide or oversee set-up and custodial service to outside groups, for all routine church activities, and for special events or services (e.g., weddings or funerals).
  11. Prepare the altar table and rails for worship and special occasions.
  12. Ensure that external grounds are maintained, including mowing, trimming, fertilizing (at regular intervals) and keeping the grounds well-manicured and free of litter and any debris.
  13. Oversee the removal of snow and ice from the church parking lot and grounds and ensure that the sidewalks and walkways are free of snow and ice prior to Sunday services.
  14. Troubleshoot all needed repairs, calling for outside service or contractors if necessary.
  15. Communicate with Trustees and Directing Pastors about needed repairs or recommended improvements to facility or grounds; attend Trustee meetings when called to do so.
  16. Assist Trustees with special projects relating to the building or grounds.
  17. Monitor and support the work of volunteers in a manner that enhances service quality, efficiency, and communication throughout the congregation. Provide volunteers with a written list of areas needing attention.
  18. Evaluate and report outcomes associated with volunteer activities to the Directing Pastors, and other appropriate church authorities.
  19. General Responsibilities: Attend weekly staff meetings. Attend Trustees meetings as requested. Report incidents of suspected fraud or concerns about grossly inappropriate behavior to the Directing Pastors. In the event of suspected misconduct of the Directing Pastors, reports should be made to the Chair of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee. Such other and further duties as the Directing Pastors may assign.


  1. High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education preferred.
  2. Previous maintenance experience required. Previous experience working with third party service providers strongly preferred.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the areas of mechanics, carpentry, painting, and electrical work.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in preventative maintenance.
  5. Ability to make basic repairs or provide maintenance to heating, air conditioning, and the physical plant.
  6. Physical ability to perform common custodial work.
  7. Ability to work cooperatively as a team member with church staff and members.
  8. Ability to supervise custodial and lock-up personnel, organize work and schedules and ensure work done by others is completed appropriately and correctly.
  9. Ability to organize efficiently, establish priorities and attend to details.
  10. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality,
  11. Be available for emergencies that may occur after regular working hours.
  12. Ability to speak and act in a manner that is consistent with Christian principles.
  13. Willingness and ability to act as a servant leader to meet the needs of First United Methodist Church and its members and guests.
  14. Willingness to work varying hours and days, including occasional Sundays and occasionally travel around the community to companies and organizations.

Physical capabilities sufficient for performing common custodial work, including the ability to sweep, mop and vacuum, bend at the waist, stand and/or walk for the duration of the work shift, and lift up to 50 pounds. Close vision and depth perception, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate handheld tools and standard office equipment. Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, hold tools and equipment, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must be able to climb flights of stairs and ladders and utilized lifts to access all areas of the church. Able to communicate effectively with staff, members, and others in person, by telephone, and in writing.
